Windows Systems Administrators must address Windows Firewall configuration errors for optimal network security. If your firewall configuration is not strong; the whole infrastructure is at risk (read up on how Trojan Horse and Worm viruses act).
Here’s an easy-to-follow guide:
Recognize Firewall Issues. Recognize any specific issues like blocked applications, incorrect rules or network connection restrictions with your firewall.
Access Firewall Configurations. Navigating to Control Panel or Settings and choosing System and Security > Windows Defender Firewall will give access to its settings.
Verify Windows Firewall Status. Verify whether Windows Firewall is active; if it has been disabled, enable it for basic protection purposes.
Review Firewall Rules. Accessing “Advanced Setting” allows you to review both inbound and outbound firewall rules, enabling you to identify any that could be blocking applications or creating issues.
Create, Edit, Modify or Remove Rules. Add, edit or delete rules as required with ease using “New Rule”, which enables you to specify programs, ports and ensure your network remains accessible.
Access ‘Advanced Settings’. Access “Advanced settings” to set additional configuration options such as firewall profiles (Domain Private Public), connection rules and notifications settings.
Reset Firewall Defaults With “Restore defaults,”. You can restore firewall settings back to their initial configurations – ideal for fixing misconfigurations caused by accidental changes.
Check Group Policy Settings in Domain Environments. In domain environments, review the Group policy settings related to Firewall Rules and Configurations before updating as necessary.
Launch Windows Firewall Troubleshooter. You can utilize Windows Firewall Troubleshooter for automatic diagnosis and repair of common firewall issues.
Scan your computer for Malware using antivirus software to perform a scan. Malware can alter firewall settings and cause serious problems on the computer.
Firewall Restart Service. You can restart Windows Firewall using Services interface (services.msc). This method has proven very successful.
Document Changes. For future reference, keep a record of any modifications or adjustments to rules or settings which have been implemented, or any incidents which arise that need troubleshooting.
